Sprayed Textures

From the lightest of stipples to the heaviest of Mediterranean swirls, the texture on your walls and ceilings does a lot to create your home’s specific look and feel. It can also be a fun way to change your home’s appearance. A sprayed drywall texture is the most popular application method today.

There are many alternatives to simply painting or hanging wallpaper on your walls these days to make your space unique and customized to fit your personality. Adding texture to your walls has gained in popularity.

Ceiling and wall spray texture is applied generally with an air pistol or wand that sprays the texture material onto the surfaces. Different consistencies, aggregates, and mixtures, along with different air pressures passed through the product, can produce an array of finishes from a thick spatter, to an orange peel finish. Along with the different finishes, there is also an option to hand apply texture, or knockdown a sprayed on texture.

By adjusting mixture consistency and/or varying the atomizing pressure, we can create custom effects from spray spatter and spatter knockdowns to orange peel finishes.

What are my options for drywall texture?

Simply put, endless. Drywall texture is a matter of personal preference limited only by skill level, or imagination of the tradesman.

Today, the highest demand texture in Minnesota is Fog/Knockdown texture applied to ceilings. Many clients are mixing and matching textures depending on different architectural preferences. A light orange peel applied to walls with a heavy knockdown ceiling is a popular treatment.

Universal Spray & Drywall has experienced spray professionals that can custom texture ceilings and walls to your liking. Some of the more typical textures Universal Spray & Drywall offers:

  • “POPCORN” TEXTURE — Also called regular acoustic texture, this is the standard of the ceiling textures. It is a polystyrene beaded texture that has 100% coverage. Almost all manufacturers recommend priming the ceiling prior to application for a better bond and to reduce the possibilities of color variations bleeding through the bare sheetrock surface. However, special pricing should be requested for priming ceilings as this is not the “industry standard.”
  • POPCORN WITH GLITTER – Glitter is added to the “popcorn” texture to give it an incredible sparkle that will make your ceilings stand out from the norm.
  • KNOCKDOWN — Knockdown can be applied from light brocade to a heavy Spanish/Mediterranean look. Knockdown needs to be painted; it is only a partial covering of the surface. 50 -75% of total surface coverage.
  • FOG/KNOCKDOWN CEILINGS — This is the cream of the crop when it comes to knockdown textures. This procedure requires one day of drying time between applications. A fog is applied to the ceiling first to allow it equal absorption rate before the final knockdown is applied. It may be left as a two-tone look or it can be painted over.
  • SPLATTER — Splatter can be applied as small as a pencil lead to as large as a dime. Splatter needs to be painted; it is only a partial covering of the surface. 30 – 70% of total coverage.
  • ORANGE PEEL — It literally looks like the skin of an orange – a good alternative to the smooth look. Orange Peel needs to be painted; it is only a partial covering of the surface. 70 – 95% of total surface coverage.
  • FOG or SMOOTH — Fog was designed as an alternative to skim coating ceilings and walls. It helps alleviate the difference between the texture of the paper on the sheetrock and the sanded drywall joints. Fog needs to be painted as it is not washable and is not designed as a finished product.
  • Hand Textures – There are many hand trawled textures available to put a specialized custom look to your design. Click here for more information.
